What a lovely surprise visit we received last night, from one of Dr. Mc Carthy's grandchildren , Philip Mc Carthy.
Philip is touring Ireland with his wife Jane and on speck, after travelling around Clare, they popped into our grounds last night where they met John Farragher & Enda Mongan. Such was their luck to meet club members due to a delayed training session.
After a few calls, Mary Cullen Ward sourced the Dr. Mc Carthy Cup and Colin Burke kindly brought it to the pitch .Dara,Colin's son, captained the winning team last year, where Kinvara GAA play for the prestigious Dr. Mc Carthy Cup annually.
This Cup dates back to 1963 and is one of oldest, original, and active cups in the whole GAA.
Dr. Francis McCarthy was an Irish-American, born in 1883 in Boston who passed through Kinvara in 1962, where he stopped to chat to a local man, Ritchie Johnston. After an hour or so, Dr. McCarthy departed but left his camera behind. He returned about an hour later to find his camera in safe hands. To show his appreciation he gave a donation of $50.
A cup was bought and donated to Kinvara GAA for the youth of the parish to play for.
Dr. Mc Carthy was back again in 1963 to make an official presentation to the club.
It was lovely talking to both Philip & Jane ,hearing about their life in Buffalo NY and their connections to other relatives of Dr. Mc Carthy who visited us over the years. It was such a pity we didn't have much time with them but hopefully in the future we will meet again.
