Kinvara GAA would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the late Gerry McCormack, who sadly passed away this Easter weekend.
Gerry had a strong love for the GAA and represented our club with distinction, especially during the 1970’s. During that time he won South Board U21 hurling medals in 1973 and 1974, and a county Junior League medal in 1977. He also won a South Board U21 football medal in 1974.
Gerry played all his hurling in the full back line, and was an outstanding corner back in those two U21 South Board wins. Although he was still only a minor on them teams, his performances were full of maturity, skill and speed, and he gave a most difficult time to any forward who was unfortunate enough to be put into his corner.
The late Tony Moylan once named his best fifteen team of Kinvara players that he saw ever hurl. Tony gave Gerry the number four jersey on his selection. He joined good company in that full back line, along with two other greats Colm Corless and Kevin Huban.
Gerry was also involved with many teams down through the years, and was well thought of in his knowledge and wisdom by all players. In most recent times he was frequently up at the pitch helping out at matches as umpire or linesman.
We send our thoughts to his wife Bernie, children Katie, Conor and Caiman, the extended McCormack family, his neighbours, friends, and all who knew him, especially his friends in the Connemara Pony Breeder’s Society.
Gerry McCormack RIP
